This course will provide an introduction to the practice of textual analysis in a financial setting. The focus of the course is on using quantitative data from social media settings, analyst commentary, political commentary, company transcripts, and articles about financial markets. The course gives participants the skills to analyze this data in a quantitative fashion and draw salient empirical conclusions.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:
- Describe the current state of the art on textual analysis
- Build a textual analysis data dictionary to enable empirical examination of qualitative data
- Create a database of qualitative data for empirical analysis
- Explain the techniques used to convert qualitative data to quantitative data
- Evaluate the results of quantitative textual analysis
- Identify key opportunities and risks that are derived from empirical examination of text data
