Equity Modeling Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Review the mechanics of business valuation
  • Discuss the primary and secondary sources that may be necessary to create a model
  • Analyze stock reports to see how analysts value companies
  • Create a model to value a company

This course is broken up into four sessions:

  • Session 1: Common Valuation Methodologies will review with participants how companies are valued based on DCF, dividend valuation, and relative value ratios. This session will also show students how to analyze market signals that may help with valuation, including stock prices, ratings, and credit spreads.
  • In Session 2: Information Gathering and Steps to Creating a Model, participants will learn how to enumerate the sources of information that are necessary to create a valuation model, including primary, secondary, interpreting accounting issues, and understanding non-financial issues. By the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to create and test assumptions, review model results, and discuss scenario analysis.
  • By the end of Session 3: Analyzing Stock Reports, participants will be able to read and analyze several stock reports. They will then learn how to evaluate how stock analysts assign value to stocks.
  • The final session of the Equity Modeling Course, Session 4: Applying Knowledge to a Class Case will involve students participating in an example case. They will discuss the steps necessary to create a valuation model and then create that model for the class case. The results of the model will be reviewed and assumptions will be tested for reasonableness. After various scenarios are compared and contrasted, the findings of the class model will be presented with a buy/hold/sell decision and recommendations on how to increase the value of the case company will be discussed.
