In the United States, futures have been around since the 1840s! Although originally targeting the agricultural sector, futures have expanded well beyond their original target audience. Today, futures not only cover commodities, but also include a wide variety of asset classes including equity, bonds, and short-term interest rates. This course is designed to introduce participants to futures. The focus will be on equities and bonds. The features and characteristics of these instruments are analyzed and then the course moves into pricing, applications, and risks. Giving the class a very high rating, a recent graduate said they found “the comparing and contrasting of futures and forwards useful.”

• Discuss applications for speculating and hedging
• Demonstrate how to price a futures contract
• Identify the risks for futures

• Introduction to Capital/Financial Markets or equivalent knowledge
